Surveying and Mapping with PPK Drone & Why Mapping Drones are best friends for a Land surveyor.

Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) have been used in terrestrial surveying for a year’s to improve the accuracy of GNSS data.

Real time kinematics(RTK) and post processed kinematic(PPK) correct the location of a drone mapping data and bring absolute accuracy down to centi-meter(cm) range.

However we need to understand the PPK drone and RTK drone.

RTK Drone

  • An RTK drone carries an on board GNSS RTK receiver.
  • During flight time uninterrupted connections are required from the GNSS base station through drone base station to the drone.
  • If the connections are interrupted or tropospheric delay etc brings Accuracy down to meter level.
  • No post flight correction data available i.e flight area limited by signal strength.

RTK requires four constant communications to correct satellite location data.

It’s nice to get corrected data during a flight. However in real condition obstacles or beyond visual line of sight flight might interrupt the signal strength.

RTK gives you a cm level accuracy once the signal is constant.

As per the pix4d survey PPK reliability is better.

PPK Drone

  • A PPK drone equipped with an on board GNSS PPK receiver that gathers data from satellites and logs it for retrieval after flight.
  • The satellite data from a GNSS receiver ona nearby base station is collected and after the flight, it’s factored in with the drone data to correct satellite signal error bringing accuracy down to centimeter level range.
  • In case of PPK drone, neither GNSS base station to drone ppk receiver, nor drone base station to drone correction data communication are required, only the telemetry connection is required for safe flight.
  • After a successful flight, a correction process needs to be applied through suitable software.Eg:-RTKlib.

Data with absolute accuracy is then available for post processing into mapping survey results.

PPK requires two constant communication lines to correct satellite location.

PPK drones don’t need to maintain a link between the drone base station and the drone in case of ppk. This method presents more reliable data correction and easier setup.

Surveying and Mapping with Aerosys Aviation PPK enabled Drone(VEDANSH)

  • The Mapping Beetle(VEDANSH) is equipped with a GNSS PPK receiver which gathers data from satellites and logs it for retrieval after the flight.
  • The drone takes numerous photos as per the desired mission or area of interest .
  • After a successful flight we take out the logs and photos for post processing to produce highly accurate output as required.
  • Vedansh is an industry grade professional micro category made-in-india drone with built in safe features.
  • One of the major advantages of vedansh is it’s give centimeter level accuracy in all the axes.
  • High area coverage up to 1.2 sq km at 120m altitude in a single flight.
  • PPK enabled drone data is more reliable than RTK drone.

PPK drones  give better accuracy than RTK drones because if you are doing surveying and mapping for a large area, the connection between drone and base station may interrupt or can’t be constant because of buildings, vegetation etc.

So you can’t really expect an RTK drone to deliver Accurate accuracy.

Why Mapping Drones are best friends for a Land surveyor

There are several reasons for this, the main one being the fact that data captured via drone mapping perfectly complements what engineers can see from the ground.

  • Reduction in surveying and mapping time: When it comes to speed, there’s no comparison between drone mapping and land surveying. Land surveying requires long hours and carrying heavy equipment from one location to another. Instead of days or weeks, drone mapping takes minutes to complete a site survey with the same amount of accuracy as you would on foot. Drone mapping makes it possible for ad hoc flights of entire sites or specific areas of projects to gain easy access to the most up-to-date information on a site on a regular basis.
  • Reduction in surveying and mapping cost:The ability to make efficient use of a budget is at the forefront of most folks’ minds. The beauty of drone technology is you most likely already have the budget. Drone mapping can fit seamlessly into your pre-existing budget allocations and can also increase company budget and time to spend on other tasks. A traditional ground survey team may need a month to map a dangerous 100-acre site, but a mapping drone can complete the same task in  an hour.  The increased speed and automation that drone mapping provides permit companies to safely take on and complete more jobs for more clients, on more sites, in less time.
  • Safety of Employees: Though land surveyors are paid above the national average, their work does not always consider weather conditions or physical fatigue. Land surveyors’ work is always outdoors regardless of weather and consists of a lot of stamina and potentially long commutes. There is also an additional danger of tough or unexpected terrain. Having a drone mapping solution allows for autonomous flights eliminates several risks associated with land surveying such as heavy equipment and hazardous injuries.  With the push of a button, a drone can autonomously survey a site, obtain a complete aerial mapping of the site, land back at its launch location, and upload its model and data to a secure cloud in a matter of minutes. Plus, this entire process does not put anyone at risk of serious injury.
