Surveying and Mapping with PPK Drone & Why Mapping Drones are best friends for a Land surveyor.

Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) have been used in terrestrial surveying for a year’s to improve the accuracy of GNSS data.

        Real time kinematics(RTK) and post processed kinematic(PPK) correct the location of a drone mapping data and bring absolute accuracy down to centi-meter(cm) range.

However we need to understand the PPK drone and RTK drone.

RTK Drone

  • An RTK drone carries an on board GNSS RTK receiver.
  • During flight time uninterrupted connections are required from the GNSS base station through drone base station to the drone.
  • If the connections are interrupted or tropospheric delay etc brings Accuracy down to meter level.
  • No post flight correction data available i.e flight area limited by signal strength.

RTK requires four constant communications to correct satellite location data.

It’s nice to get corrected data during a flight.However in real condition obstacles or beyond visual line of sight flight might interrupt the signal strength.

RTK gives you a cm level accuracy once the signal is constant.

As per the pix4d survey PPK reliability is better.

PPK Drone

  • A PPK drone equipped with an on board GNSS PPK receiver that gathers data from satellites and logs it for retrieval after flight.
  • The satellite data from a GNSS receiver ona nearby base station is collected and after the flight, it’s factored in with the drone data to correct satellite signal error bringing accuracy down to centimeter level range.
  • In case of PPK drone,neither GNSS base station to drone ppk receiver, nor drone base station to drone correction data communication are required, only the telemetry connection is required for safe flight.
  • After a successful flight, a correction process needs to be applied through suitable software.Eg:-RTKlib.

       Data with absolute accuracy is then available for post processing into mapping survey results.

PPK requires two constant communication lines to correct satellite location.

PPK drones don’t need to maintain a link between the drone base station and the drone in case of ppk. This method presents more reliable data correction and easier setup.

PPK drones  give better accuracy than RTK drones because if you are doing surveying and mapping for a large area, the connection between drone and base station may interrupt or can’t be constant because of buildings, vegetation etc.

So you can’t really expect an RTK drone to deliver Accurate accuracy.

Why Mapping Drones are best friends for a Land surveyor

There are several reasons for this, the main one being the fact that data captured via drone mapping perfectly complements what engineers can see from the ground.
